Simulation: UEP takes pride in its robust simulation program, which plays a vital role in our continuing medical education efforts. Working closely with the Intermountain Simulation Consortium we offer both in-situ and ex-situ simulation experiences, partnering closely with each department to promote a culture of lifelong learning. Through these collaborative efforts, we aim to continuously enhance clinical skills, teamwork, and patient safety across all levels of our medical community. Our recent projects have included MCI events, Central-Line Mastery Training, adult and pediatric sepsis care, trauma and additional high acuity-low frequency procedural training with Minnesota Tubes, Lateral Canthotomy, Thoracotomy, Fiberoptic Scopes and Cricothyroidotomy.

Wellness: At UEP, we believe that provider wellness is critically important for both the health and satisfaction of our providers and for the quality of care we provide to patients. Our Wellness Improvement Committee gives our providers tools to be their best at work and provide the work-life balance they need to be their best selves for their friends and families at home. Our committee works to get our team together outside of the ED with activities such as book clubs, mountain bike rides, hikes, ski days and family events such as movie nights. We have also hired an experienced therapist who is very familiar with medical providers and the unique stresses we experience both at work and at home who provides dedicated free appointments for the short term needs of our providers.
Tele-EM: UEP is actively engaged in Intermountain Health's Tele Emergency Medicine program. UEP utilizes technology to develop novel ways to manage the increasing demand on emergency department resources, and to lower costs for patients and the healthcare system. TeleEM engages with patients upstream in their care caring for patients in novel and more cost-effective ways outside of the ED. UEP and Intermountain Health align incentives for patients, providers, and the healthcare system to provide a satisfying care experience for both patients and providers.
APP Program: UEP's approximately 20 APPs work collaboratively with physicians to provide efficient and high-quality patient care. Physicians staff around 15% of APP cases and oversee department flow, APPs independently manage the remaining patients, always with physician consultation and support available. This collaborative model ensures comprehensive care, with physicians only co-signing charts for cases they directly staffed. Coverage varies from double coverage with physicians in the morning hours at some facilities to morning and evening coverage along with multiple physicians at the busier facilities.
Resident Education: UEP has a long history of educating residents and students, participating in the University of Utah Emergency Medicine Residency Program since its inception in 2005. As an Intermountain Health affiliate, 25% of EM resident rotations occur within the Intermountain system. As adjunct faculty for the University of Utah, UEP physicians provide clinical training and supervision in our emergency departments, with numerous opportunities for didactic teaching in the residency program. UEP physicians also educate Transitional Year and Internal Medicine interns rotating in the ED monthly, as well as medical students and select APP students across all departments.
